The site of Ancient Messene or Messini lies in a fertile valley approximately 30 km away from Kalamata. Picturesquely situated on a hillside, the remains of this vast ancient city are one of Greece’s best-preserved archaeological sites and one of the most beautifully situated. Additionally, once here, one can enrich the overall experience with a self-guided tour inside the ancient city to get the full picture and the maximum experience of this amazing place.
The Trip
Meet your guides at the parking lot of the Ancient Messene site. Start with a quick introduction to the use of electric mountain bikes and a safety briefing. Then ride down a gravel road next to the ancient site and the surrounding green hills. Your first stop is to see the ancient city from a viewpoint overlooking the whole site and to hear your guide as he narrates the history behind what you see. As you further descend through the valley, you encounter centenarian olive trees surrounding little villages with quiet roads. Afterwards, the trail takes you to your next stop, the fortified monastery of the “Andromonastiro”, a magnificent medieval structure dating back to the 13th century featuring fascinating frescoes, atmospheric vaulted ceilings, and beautiful Byzantine charm.
A visit here to explore the fort is an experience to remember. Here, there is a great opportunity to taste a delightful picnic under the mulberry trees of the Monastery. The next stop is at the fortification walls of the ancient Messene through a paved road that ascends gradually. Thanks to the electric bikes, we can adjust the effort we put in and save some energy to enjoy all the beautiful scenery! Park the bikes next to one of the main wall gates and explore the towers. These colossal walls are astoundingly thick, formidable fortifications that protected the ancient city from Sparta’s invasions. The view over the ancient city, the surrounding valleys, and Messinian Bay is spectacular. After stretching your legs, you cycle down the last section on a quiet road back to the Ancient Messene parking lot, where we started. Here we say goodbye and depart with memories that will last forever.

Yes, the ability to ride a bicycle is important. Even if you do not have previous experience with an e-bike, it is necessary to be confident riding a bike. It is suggested to have ridden a bike recently, and not just have the knowledge and the skills since childhood. E-Bike Tour Ancient Messene Way is easy to perform since you have basic cycling skills. All of our trips are about journeying. We cycle at a relaxed pace; we learn on the move and enjoy the natural environment. If you are a group of experienced riders wanting to complete a demanding journey, then a private trip would be the best option.
Is this e-bike tour suitable for families with kids?
Absolutely Yes! A cycling trip is a wonderful way for your child to explore the outdoors. There are so many reasons to love a cycling trip with kids. Watching them gain confidence when outdoors, giving them the chance to see places from a different perspective, and teaching them about the natural environment.
What is the minimum age for a kid to join this e-biking tour?
Kids from 10 may join a standard group trip or a private trip. We always cycle with kids at a relaxed pace giving them the opportunity to learn and have fun.
What kind of fitness level do I need to take part?
Relatively good physical condition is required. Keep in mind that the most important thing is to have fun and to enjoy the journey. We’ll take plenty of breaks and cycle at an achievable pace.
What is the size of a group?
From 2 participants up to 12 people on our standard group trips. Most of our groups consist of couples, families, and individuals. We can also cater to smaller groups on private trips.
What is the trip best suited for me? How do I choose?
All of our trips are designed to be suitable for everybody. Each one has its own unique characteristics. The best way to choose a trip among others is to check which one departs closer to the place you are staying.
Do you offer private trips?
Yes, we can organize a private tour, standard or tailor-made, just for you, your family, or your friends.
Should I book a standard trip or a private trip?
If you are happy to ride with a mixed group or don’t want to spend as much money, then booking a standard group trip is the best way to go. Private trips really work best with groups of experienced riders or groups of friends who want to do something a bit different, would like to do a more advanced journey, or just want to have privacy and enjoy the trip just themselves.
Is there a picnic stop?
Yes, simple, nutritious, and flavorsome, the food is one of the pleasures during our trips. Halfway, we make a relaxing stop at a nice place to taste a picnic with freshly baked bread, organic garden-grown fruits and vegetables, homemade olive oil, and cheese.
What route will we take?
We usually perform our tours within a certain route, aiming to visit the most beautiful spots each trip has to offer; however, your guide is likely to choose an alternative route that suits the conditions on the day and the experience and needs of the group. This is the safest and best way to operate cycling trips.
Where do I park my car?
You can park your vehicle safely and for free near our meeting point. Feel free to ask us about the parking conditions for a specific trip.
What happens if the weather is unsuitable?
A cycling trip is either cancelled, and we return your money, or arranged for another day.

Amazing tour! We met our guide Trufonas who explained everything and gave us a clear explanation about the e-bikes as it was our first time. The tour went around the ancient site through some gentle dirt roads and we visited a marvelous medieval monastery which otherwise we would have missed. This was the highlight of our trip to Greece. Fotis met with us in the morning and took us through what to expect and our level of experience using mountain bikes. The ride was mixed terrain and not difficult at all! We visited different parts of the ruins as well as a monastery which was absolutely amazing! Fotis was a great guide, with in depth knowledge of the area and history. His snacks were delicious which were enjoyed on the part of the ancient wall. We hope to return in the future!
Amazing trip with our guide Fotis. Can't recommend this tour enough. A unique experience of ancient Messini. The stop off at Andromonástēro was particularly special and we were given a brilliant tour by the caretaker, who gave great insight into the history of the monastery as well as his gardens.
