The Place
Land of stone and light, villages perched on the outskirts of Mount Taygetos with tower houses and countless chapels. Settlements bordering the sea, steep canyons and caves, and beaches entangled with olive groves. The charm of Mani is these contrasts. Here, every stone has its history. Here, the magnificence of the mountainous nature is harmoniously combined with the allure of the sea as Mount Taygetos is so close to the embrace of the Mediterranean. Hiking Kardamyli is the way to explore this wild and beautiful area.
The Trip
Starting our hike from the fort of old Kardamyli, we follow the trail of the ancient so-called “royal street” connecting Kardamyli with Sparta in ancient times. We walk on a pathway immersed in olive trees, pines, and cypress trees. We visit some of the traditional villages of the region, and we walk through their narrow streets and alleys, learning about their history. Byzantine churches, stone-built watchtowers, old fountains, and olive and grain mills reveal the life of locals in the past. A blast of colors and aromas from wildflowers and herbs overwhelms us and brings us even closer to the natural environment. Just a breath away, mount Taygetos with its imposing peaks. A small break for a healthy picnic with traditional local delicacies gives us additional energy.

Do I need previous experience?
No, many of our customers are first-timers. The Hiking Kardamyli trip is easy to catch up, and beginners can complete a decent journey on their first-time hiking trip. All of our trips are about journeying. We walk at a relaxed pace; we learn on the move and enjoy the natural environment. If you are a group of experienced hikers wanting to complete a demanding journey, then a private trip would be the best option.
Is this hiking trip suitable for families with kids?
Absolutely Yes! A hiking trip is a wonderful way for your child to explore the outdoors. There are so many reasons to love a hiking trip with kids. Watching them gain confidence when outdoors gives them the chance to see places from a different perspective, teaching them about the natural environment.
What is the minimum age for a kid to join this hiking trip?
Kids from 10 may join a standard group trip or a private trip. We always walk with kids at a relaxed pace, allowing them to learn and have fun.
What kind of fitness level do I need to take part?
Relatively good physical condition is required. Keep in mind that the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the journey. We’ll take plenty of breaks and walk at an achievable pace.
What is the size of a group?
From 4 participants up to 12 people on our standard group trips. Most of our groups consist of couples, families, and individuals. We can also cater to smaller groups on private trips.
What is the trip best suited for me? How do I choose?
All of our trips are designed to be suitable for everybody. Each one has its own unique characteristics. The best way to choose a trip among others is to check which one departs closer to the place you are staying.
Do you offer private trips?
Yes, we can organize a private tour, standard or tailor-made, just for you, your family, or your friends.
Should I book a standard trip or a private trip?
If you are happy to hike with a mixed group or don’t want to spend as much money, then booking a standard group trip is the best way to go. Private trips really work best with groups of experienced hikers or groups of friends who want to do something a bit different, would like to do a more advanced journey, or just want to have privacy and enjoy the trip just themselves.
Is lunch provided?
Yes, simple, nutritious, and flavorsome, the food is one of the pleasures during our trips. Halfway, we make a relaxing stop at a nice place to taste a picnic with freshly baked bread, organic garden-grown fruits and vegetables, homemade olive oil, and cheese.
What route will we take?
We usually perform our tours within a certain route, aiming to visit the most beautiful spots each trip has to offer; however, your guide is likely to choose an alternative route that suits the conditions on the day and the experience and needs of the group. This is the safest and best way to operate hiking trips.
Where do I park my car?
You can park your vehicle safely and for free near our meeting point. Feel free to ask us about parking conditions for a specific trip.
What happens if the weather is unsuitable?
A hiking trip is either canceled, and we return your money, or rescheduled for another day.

Hiking with Fotios was our second activity with Explore Messinia during our trip and it was a great day up in the hills above Kardamyli. We saw things we wouldn’t have seen had we gone on our own. The view is all around you fantastic!! From the multicolored flowers that appeared by thousands, the fields with the white flowers, the fields with the yellow flowers, the triple leaves, the fields with the red-red paparazzi, the swinging almonds, the birds that play and sing, the blue, the perfect blue-blue of the sky, the mountains of Taigetu that begin to green again, the calderas the paths with the shale , all-pebble mantras . And of course the sea, the real sea as we have to say, completely clear clear clear waters, which you don't often find Especially on the beach of Kardamili in Ritsasi
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful 5-hour hike with Fotis today - high into the mountains by Kardamyli. Fotis ably guided us through some challenging terrain (and we’re not teenagers!) with no doubts that we couldn’t do it! His positive energy propelled us through a delightful experience - and really, a picnic in the middle of it! We highly recommend this well-organized company who take great pride in well-trained staff. They provided a window to the “Mani” for us that we would never have otherwise experienced. We had a wonderful hike up into the hills above Kardamyli with Fotius. It’s a beautiful and interesting part of the world and he took us places we never would have gone on our own. We enjoyed getting to know him and learning some history of the area. Also, he brought an excellent picnic lunch and picked oranges fresh from the tree for dessert. It was a lovely day!
An unforgettable trip! Hiking in Kardamyli. We definitely recommend that you book this tour. The way we were guided, the stories, the patience (we had a child with us), the energy and of course the surroundings and the route itself. We walked with high sun on a March day, a little sweat on the climbs, a little shade along the way, the authentic small towns and houses on the way - NATURE - flowers, trees, small animals and the paths! And of course a little refueling at the top. Perfect! Also the kid still talks about it - so even though he thinks it was hard - it left good marks on him too.
This hike with Fotis in Kardamily was a sporting and cultural experience, with breathtaking landscapes, old stones, small and varied paths, olive fields, chapels, small local stories and the great history of the country , all told with humor by our guide.

Great kayaking trip around Kardamyli, I couldn't recommend it more. Roque taught me everything I needed to know about kayaking and ensure I was moving correctly. He gave me many tips to improve my techniques. The tour itself is fun and relaxing and you visit an amazing cave in the beach nearby. Also the picnic was great with the best local products. Roque made everything fun and kept our group safe. I really recommend this tour if you want to see the Mani coast from the sea and have lots of fun.
My wife and I were in Greece and had someone book a hiking trip and kayaking trip for us. We did not know anything about Explore Messinia. We are so glad we booked the trips because the hiking and the kayaking were some of the best parts of our trip. Fotis took us on a hike in Kardamyli. It is a great hike through the hills and through little villages along the way. We had lunch in the most beautiful spot facing the snow capped mountains. His lunch was the ultimate Greek lunch with fresh vegetables, bread and olive oil, cheese, olives, all sprinkled with his secret ingredients of sea salt and oregano. He is a life long resident of the area so he is the ultimate animator, bringing the hills to life with his stories of history and his real life experiences harvesting the olive trees. If we had another day we would have booked another hike with him. Instead we had a trip with another person in the family business, Giorgos his cousin and his colleague George. Their first priority was to make sure we had fun. Their experience showed through at every turn as they guided us on the shores of the Gulf, giving tips on appropriate technique and safety, along with interesting stories about the culture and the sea. The lunch was as good as what Fotis put together with his own twists of fruit and cheese. I cannot say enough good things about Explore Messinia. Instead of treating us like customers, they treated us like friends and family. When we go back, we will definitely plan a trip with Explore Messinia.
Beautiful hike under a blue sky and big sun, led by a very friendly, attentive guide, and sharing all his historical, botanical knowledge with kindness. we were able to appreciate the beauty of the site and ... share a beer after 4 hours walking. Especially drinking a lot, to be expected.
I participated in the full moon weekend August program with the ascent to the summit and the sunrise with the pyramid of Taygetos. Cave exploration, night stays in a tent all had. Experience, great organization, unbeatable drivers! I highly recommend it!Thank you very much!!
I conducted with the company the exploration of the Rintomos canyon and sea kayaking from Kardamili to Kalogria. Having travelled from the Himalayas to the Andes and from the rocky mountains of Canada to the Swiss and Italian Alps, New Zealand and the Pacific Ocean, I must highlight the high level of service, and the observance of all safety standards. It is worth mentioning that all my dealing with Giorgos and Tryfonos was friendly, heartfelt and I feel like I was with a group of friends. Appreciating their level of service, I mentioned that in the future I will participate in other events. I strongly recommend to those who are in Messinian Mana to do the Rintomos Canyon and the sea kayaking I did. These villages the visit to the Mediterranean Mana is for everyone incomplete.

My husband and I spent the morning with Trifonas hiking up and out of Kardamyli having no idea what we were in for. Spectacular experience! The hike was challenging but enjoyable. The walk through the hilltop villages were intriguing and a wonderful way to meet locals and enjoy Greek hospitality. The classic Greek meal after we were done was the best- I can still taste the fresh cucumbers and tomatoes with olive oil and bread. Yum!! Totally inspired us to return for more hiking in the Mani Peninsula! Thank you Trifonas and Explore Messinia for a GREAT experience!!
Family of 4, including two young teenagers (10 and 13) we loved this outing, suitable for everyone. A very accessible discovery of the coast and its wonders in a super friendly and positive climate. Not about sporting prowess but just about shared pleasures. Our companion was very open and friendly, he knew how to adapt to all the family members and taught us bcp of things. To do!!
